From Shelter to Service

Nestle’s Journey to Becoming a Life-Changing Companion

At just 11 months old, Nestle was already showing signs of greatness. Confident, friendly, and quick to learn, he had mastered retrieving and dropping objects—an ability that can make a profound difference in the life of a veteran or first responder with physical limitations.

So when Barb, a trainer from Blue Star Service Dogs, visited Detroit Animal Care and Control, she asked longtime volunteer Nicole Marie which dog she’d recommend for their service dog training program. Nicole didn’t hesitate: “Nestle.”

A Small Setback

Nestle was scheduled to head to Thumb Correctional Facility alongside another DACC favorite, Scrambled, as part of Blue Star’s prison-based training program. But on the day of departure, there was a hiccup—Nestle came out of his kennel limping, unable to put weight on one of his front legs.

Rather than risk injury, his transfer was postponed. Thankfully, Dr. Lindo was able to examine Nestle shortly afterward and gave him the all-clear. Nestle was back on track and set to leave the following week.

A Much-Needed Break from the Shelter

During the delay, Shannon Nolan opened her heart and home to Nestle, giving him a chance to decompress outside the shelter. It was more than just a foster stay—it was an opportunity for Nestle to shine. And shine he did.

At her son’s soccer game, Nestle stole the show. Several people asked if he was available for adoption, and Shannon described him as a dog who “shows well.” His friendliness, calm demeanor, and handsome good looks made an impression everywhere he went.

A Warm Sendoff

When the day came for Nestle to start his service dog journey, Lori Shafer, who coordinates transport for DACC’s rescue and training partners, made sure he got to his destination safely. On the ride to the correctional facility, Nestle continued being Nestle—charming everyone he met and becoming a quick favorite among staff.

The Power of Teamwork

Nestle’s story is more than just a feel-good tale—it’s a testament to the power of community. From Nicole’s keen eye to Shannon’s loving home to Lori’s steady hand behind the wheel, it took a team of compassionate individuals to get Nestle where he needed to go.

And now? Nestle will be keeping his name as he begins formal training to become a service dog for a veteran or first responder. We’ll be cheering him on every step of the way.

Why It Matters

Programs like the one offered by Blue Star Service Dogs don’t just change the lives of dogs—they also change the lives people, including the prisoners who develop new skills and purpose through training them, and the veterans and first responders they serve. Friends of Detroit Animal Care and Control is proud to be a fellow beneficiary of the Michigan Animal Welfare Foundation, which helps support partnerships like this one.

Stay tuned for updates on Nestle—we can’t wait to see how far this incredible pup goes. 💙
